Everybody will need an advocate at some point in his or her life. Although it may sound simple, the beginning point should be to identify if and when you require an attorney. Sometimes it can be worse to not have one or put off calling one. Avoid falling for the claims that you can set up your Limited Liability Company (LLC), write your own will, and handle your divorce. Some packages may allow you to do this, but you won’t be able get legal advice to tell you about your legal options, how to protect your rights, or whether the documents will stand up in court. Once you have determined why you require an attorney, then you can determine the type of attorney you will need. Some attorneys are “general practitioners”, others are specialists in a particular area. If you are going into a personal injury case or divorce case, it is wise to look for an attorney who has expertise in that area.
Finding the right lawyer will require some effort on your part. The Yellow Pages and other web sites are a good place to start, but it’s best to ask professionals or people in your local community for referrals. Check with your state bar to see if they have a listing of attorneys in your local area. You may also want to consult a legal referral agency. It doesn’t matter what method you use to start your search. You need to be diligent. Your search will yield more satisfaction if you are more knowledgeable.
